HEAT PUMPS

DEFINITIONS:

SEER: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a measure of cooling efficiency for air conditioners and heat pumps. The higher the SEER, the more energy efficient the unit. The U.S. Government’s minimum SEER rating is 13.

HSPF: Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. This rating is used in measuring the heating efficiency of a heat pump. The higher the number, the more efficient the heat pump system.

Energy Star: A government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Energy efficient choices can save families about a third of their energy bill without sacrificing features, styles or comfort. Energy Star helps you make the energy efficient choice.

Sound Level: Measures in decibels, the lower the better. Home comfort systems have ratings between 72 and 80 decibels. Variable speed air handlers operate at low speed so they have lower perceived sound levels.

Two-Stage Operation: Units that feature two-stage operation can operate more efficiently. For most days, they use the first, lower stage to meet your heating and cooling demands. When days are extremely hot or cold, they then switch to the second, higher stage to provide maximum comfort.

Registered Warranty (Limited): A warranty provided by the manufacturer. Typically, it provides parts replacement for a set amount of time on specific components.  Equipment must be registered to receive warranty stated.

Warranty (Extended): An optional extended warranty can offer worry-free protection by adding extra years of coverage to your manufacturer’s limited warranty. It may also cover additional labor and refrigerant costs on covered repairs without lengthening the limited warranty.

 

AIR HANDLERS

DEFINITIONS:

Blower Speed: Variable or multi-speed blowers in air handlers ensure that your system operates quietly and efficiently. Variable speed air handlers also remove extra moisture in those humid climates.

ComfortR: A process that helps remove extra moisture from your home by quickly chilling the cooling coil and running longer to make you more comfortable. After all, it is usually the humidity that makes us the most uncomfortable.

Convertible: There are times when space may be an issue so an air handler may be convertible from vertical to horizontal or from left to right side installation.

Registered Limited Warranty: The warranty provided by the manufacturer. Typically, it provides parts replacement for a set amount of time on specific components.

 

PACKAGED UNITS

A packaged unit contains the same components you find in a typical split system, however, they’re all engineered to work together in one cabinet. And, just like other Trane systems, you have a variety of efficiency levels and air handling options to select from.

Refrigerant: All refrigerants used in residential air conditioners meet government standards for environmental quality.  Effective January 1, 2010 new air conditioning systems are required to contain R-410A refrigerant.  R-410A is regulated under the Montreal Protocol and in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency.

DIGITAL THERMOSTATS

DEFINITIONS:

Heating Stages: If your heating system has more than one heating stage, your thermostat must accommodate those stages or it will not cycle through the stages. Multiple stages ensure quieter operation and energy savings.

Cooling Stages: Your cooling system may have multiple operating speeds. Your thermostat ensures your system cycles through those stages for quieter, more efficient operation.

Programmable: Allows you to adjust the temperature of your home multiple times a day so that you are not wasting energy during times when you are not at home. Some even have special weekend programs.

Humidity Sensor: Tells the thermostat when the moisture in the air is too high. The system will run a little longer to remove the extra humidity making your home more comfortable.
