Why Is My Heat Pump in Leland, NC Short Cycling?

During summer, your heat pump in Leland, NC may run into problems, especially if you haven’t been taking good care of it. One of the common heat pump issues that may arise is short cycling. We’ll discuss some reasons for a heat pump short cycling.

A Clogged Air Filter

Contaminants in your indoor air make your home uncomfortable because they can cause symptoms associated with poor indoor air quality, such as sneezing, nasal blockage, watery eyes, runny noses and throat discomfort. The pollutants can also enter your heat pump and coat its components, thus reducing their efficiency.

Your heat pump has an air filter that traps contaminants, preventing them from causing these problems. However, the filter cannot catch impurities efficiently forever. There will come a time when dust, pollen and other impurities will clog it, resulting in airflow problems.

Those airflow issues can make the system turn on and off constantly. To address this problem, check the air filter for your system every month, and replace it at least every three months.

Thermostat Issues

When the indoor temperatures increase during summer and it’s set to cooling mode, the thermostat detects this change and prompts the heat pump to start working to cool your house. If your thermostat is too close to windows, doors or heating/cooling appliances, it may detect fluctuating temperatures and prompt the heat pump to turn on and off multiple times. Also, the thermostat may make the HVAC system short cycle if the wiring connecting the two appliances has damaged sections.

Ask a professional to inspect the thermostat and the wires linking it to the heat pump to address the issue. Also, have the device moved away from windows, doors and heating/cooling appliances.

An Oversized Heat Pump

A heat pump qualifies as oversized if its heating and cooling capacity exceeds your home’s heating and cooling needs. An oversized heat pump turns on and off in quick succession can cool your home too quickly, causing it to not distribute the cooled air evenly. You’ll find that some rooms are cool, but others are warm and muggy.

Short cycling results in increased system breakdowns and reduced indoor comfort, so you should never ignore the issue. Call our heat pump professionals at Airmax Heating & Cooling to get your system back up and running whenever it malfunctions.
